Earth Month at McKinley Park

🌍 Earth Month at McKinley Park

Saturday, April 19, 2025
2:00 PM – 5:00 PM
McKinley Park | Pittsburgh, PA

This Earth Month, The Reading Room is joining the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy at McKinley Park for a family-friendly celebration of community, creativity, and care for the planet.

We’ll be giving away free books to children ages 4–14—some brand new, others gently loved—and pairing them with reusable book totes designed to be filled, shared, and treasured again and again.

Because just like stories, sustainability starts small.
And just because something isn’t new, doesn’t mean it isn’t valuable.

📚 Each child will be invited to choose one new book and up to three gently used books to build their own personal library.

♻️ Every child will receive a reusable tote to take their books home and learn early on that reusing and repurposing are powerful, joyful acts.

🌱 Join us for an afternoon filled with lawn games, crafts, nature play, and the simple, enduring magic of books.

We can’t wait to see you there.

Read, Run & Score

Read, Run, Score! A Sports & Literacy Challenge

In the heart of Wilkinsburg, where books and basketballs collide, young athletes and avid readers alike will gather for a one-of-a-kind event that proves reading is just as exhilarating as scoring a winning goal.

Picture this: A group of kids lined up at the starting line, their sneakers planted firmly on the pavement. The whistle blows, and they’re off—dribbling, sprinting, and leaping over hurdles. But here’s the twist: instead of passing a baton, they’re passing books!

At Read, Run, Score!, kids will move through an exciting relay course, where every station is a mix of sports and storytelling:
🏀 Dribble & Read – Can you dribble around cones while reciting a story passage?
Word Sprint Relay – Unscramble sports-themed words before making a dash!
🎯 Finish the Story Shot – Shoot a ball into the hoop after completing a sentence.
📖 Book-Toss & Trivia Finale – Show off your sports knowledge and aim for the highest-scoring target!

Each challenge blends physical movement with the power of words, showing kids that literacy and athletics go hand in hand. And the best part? Every child who completes the challenge will take home a free sports-themed book to continue their adventure long after the race ends!

Whether your child is a future MVP or a budding bookworm, they’ll leave this event feeling like a champion—because at The Reading Room, every reader is an all-star.
